Greening the Western Balkans
The initiative aims to improve the status of threatened biodiversity in the Western Balkans Six by enhancing planning, financing, implementation, and monitoring of the Nature and Biodiversity Pillar of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 14, 15, and 17. The expected outcome is the establishment of regional conservation and restoration targets, along with the enhancement of on-the-ground conservation activities. Key outputs include effective implementation and monitoring of the Nature and Biodiversity Pillar, strengthened regional cooperation and environmental governance, and improved financing for conservation measures. Planned activities encompass the preparation of strategic documents such as the Western Balkans 2030 Biodiversity Strategic Plan and the Nature Restoration Plan, development of a Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, and the launch of a GAWB Biodiversity Information Hub. Additionally, the initiative will manage and adapt the Biodiversity Task Force of South-East Europe, engage civil society organisations in governance, and implement conservation and restoration grant programmes while building capacity and raising awareness.
