Green Infrastructure Strategy

The EU Green Infrastructure Strategy1 aims to preserve, restore, and enhance green infrastructure to halt biodiversity loss and enable ecosystems to deliver essential services to society. Complementing this approach, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 promotes targeted investment in green and blue infrastructure and the systematic integration of healthy ecosystems, green infrastructure, and nature-based solutions into urban and spatial planning.

Strong synergies exist between green infrastructure and EU environmental policies on land, water, and the marine environment, as well as across a wider range of policy areas. These include agriculture and forestry, climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk prevention and reduction (notably through natural flood management and water retention), as well as energy, transport, health, and research, reflecting the cross-cutting role of nature-based solutions in achieving EU sustainability objectives.
