Nature Restoration Regulation
The Nature Restoration Regulation1 establishes binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems across the EU’s land and sea areas, with particular focus on ecosystems with high potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impacts of natural disasters. It represents a central instrument for reversing biodiversity loss and strengthening ecosystem resilience at scale.
The Regulation aims to restore ecosystems, habitats and species to:
- enable the long-term and sustained recovery of biodiverse and resilient nature;
- contribute to achieving the EU’s climate mitigation and climate adaptation objectives;
- meet international commitments.
Under the Regulation, EU Member States, and in the context of alignment, also the WB6, are expected to develop and implement Nature-based Solutions (NbS). The NbS are defined as actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems in ways that address societal challenges while delivering simultaneous benefits for human well-being and biodiversity.
